Teaching at Choate
Choate Rosemary Hall seeks to create and retain a talented, dedicated, and diverse faculty — men and women who bring to their work a contagious enthusiasm for the life of the mind.
Teaching at a boarding school is a lifestyle decision. It extends beyond teaching in the classroom to coaching on the playing fields, advising in the residences, and all the varied and informal ways in which adults and adolescents interact. One should consider a teaching career at Choate only if prepared to make this total commitment to the full residential life experience of a boarding school community.
Faculty and Curriculum
The faculty consists of just over 100 full-and part-time classroom teachers (the average class size is 12) and about 40 administrators, one-quarter of whom also teach. We have six academic departments: Arts; English; History, Philosophy, Religion and Social Sciences; Languages; Mathematics and Computer Science; Sciences.
We are known for our rigorous academic program and the breadth and depth of our curriculum, including a rich array of electives, honors, and Advanced Placement courses.
Special programs include interdepartmental and interdisciplinary study as well as intercultural travel and study in the United States and abroad, e.g. terms in France, Spain, Italy, and summer experiences in China, France, Spain, and the Navajo Nation in Arizona. In addition, many of our full-time faculty members teach in Summer Programs.
Professional Development
Supporting new faculty
Whether experienced or first-year teachers, new faculty are assigned a mentor to help them through their first year.
In addition, each academic year begins with a new faculty orientation program, followed by regular meetings throughout the year.
Faculty are supported in the development of the teaching content and methodology as well as how to work effectively with adolescents. Further study is encouraged and the school funds up to 100 percent of approved graduate study.
Each year approximately 10 sabbaticals are granted on the basis of seniority. These sabbaticals are awarded for a term (summer term is also an option) and include a stipend. Believing that good teachers are also life-long learners, the school awards approximately $100,000 annually for professional development, study/travel grants, and curriculum developments.
Benefits
We offer competitive salaries and we contribute an additional 15 percent of your pensionable pay to the TIAA/CREF Pension Plan, according to a graded vesting schedule. Generous group health care insurance coverage (you have the option of choosing a federally approved health maintenance organization) is available.
Faculty members enjoy such benefits as tuition remission for children in grades 9-12 who are enrolled at Choate Rosemary Hall.
