Choate Self-Assessment©
The Choate Self-Assessment is offered to students who have submitted an online admission application.
Choate has been an innovative leader in many areas of the secondary school educational experience and will continue in that tradition with an (optional) admission assessment.
For the last several years Choate has partnered with Dr. Robert Sternberg, Dr. Elena Grigorenko, Dr. Linda Jarvin, and their team at The PACE Center (Psychology of Abilities Competencies and Expertise) formerly at Yale, now at Tufts University.
The hope was to develop an assessment that would go beyond the predictive power of standardized tests and grades. The results from early pilots did just that, giving Choate the confidence to move ahead with this exciting project.
While the full assessment battery will not launch in the pilot years of the Choate Self-Assessment©, the elements that are being introduced represent important components in the project.
What is the Choate Self-Assessment©?
The Choate Self-Assessment is a brief, 40-question inventory that takes about 15 minutes to complete online. Each of the 40 questions is answered by clicking on a number on a scale — there are no essays to write or "trick" questions to ponder. Our purpose in offering applicants this assessment is to provide potential students with one more way to help us know them better.
When do applicants complete the Self-Assessment?
The Self-Assessment is offered to applicants electronically immediately after they submit their online admission application. A link appears on the page confirming the successful submission of their online application, offering the applicant the option of participating in the Self-Assessment. Again, participation in this pilot program is optional.
Why should an applicant participate?
The Self-Assessment is not designed to be a test of “right or wrong.” Completing it can only enhance an application for admission.
What will happen with the data collected?
This data collected in the initial pilot of the Self-Assessment will be utilized in its aggregate to help complete the development of the assessment instrument and create a database for a longitudinal study of the success of the students who complete it, working towards our ultimate goal of providing a way for potential Choate students to give us a more complete picture of themselves and a more well rounded view of their fit for Choate.
Is there a deadline for completing the Self-Assessment?
If an applicant chooses to participate, deadlines for submitting the Self-Assessment pilot are as follows:
- For applications completed by January 10, the assessment must be submitted by January 15.
- For applications submitted after January 10, the assessment must be submitted within 48 hours.
