QWhat is Choate looking for in applicants? Hide
A

The admissions staff is looking to find individuals with strong character, intellectual curiosity, motivation, extracurricular talent, and a diversity of backgrounds, interests, and life experiences.

QWhat is the profile of an admitted student? Hide
A

It is very difficult to provide a profile of an average admitted student as our admissions process is subjective. Our admissions staff takes great time and care to understand each individual applicant within the context of their environment.

However, in an effort to provide some guidance, the majority of students entering in the third or fourth forms (9th or 10th grade) have SSAT’s in the mid 80's and grade point averages of about 3.7. The majority of our older students maintain similar grades and a median SAT score of roughly 1300.

Please understand that there is no minimum requirement with regard to test scores and that the admissions staff views a student’s highest score on each portion of the test regardless of the number of times a student tests. In many cases, students whose profiles do not fall within our median range are admitted if we feel the student has the work ethic and intelligence needed to succeed at Choate.

QHow selective is Choate? Hide
A

Although it varies by grade, typically one in four students is admitted to Choate.

QWhat standardized tests are required? Hide
A

For candidates entering the:

— 9th or 10th grade, the Admission Office prefers the SSAT, but will accept the ISEE
— 11th grade applicants must submit the SSAT, the PSAT, the SAT or the ACT
— 12th grade and Postgraduate applicants must submit either the SATor ACT
— Applicants for whom English is not their first language are expected to additionally submit a TOEFL result.
