Overview
Choate Rosemary Hall seeks motivated, talented students of strong character regardless of their family's ability to pay. To this end, the school commits more than $6.8 million to need-based financial assistance. Students receiving financial aid at Choate comprise 30 percent of our student body and come from a wide range of geographical, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Intended as a supplement to family resources, financial aid awards are made not only to families whose ability to pay school costs is extremely limited, but also to those of somewhat more substantial means who may need only a minor subsidy to meet Choate’s tuition requirements.

From One of Our Parents —
"We allowed our son to make his school decision not based on location and cost, but where he felt most comfortable. He chose Choate.
"My husband and I work hard and have to sacrifice for this education, but it is something we both feel strongly about."
Financial Aid Determination
Once a family submits a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS), the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) will compute an estimate of a family’s contribution toward education. This figure serves as a basis in determining financial need.
The Choate Financial Aid Committee receives a Report of Family Contribution from SSS and uses this report, along with a copy of the family’s current year federal tax return, to calculate a financial aid award. Essentially, if a family's expected contribution as determined by the Choate Financial Aid Committee is equal to or greater than the total school cost, the applicant does not qualify for financial aid. If, however, the family's expected contribution is less than the total school cost, the difference between the total school cost and the expected contribution determines the amount of financial aid Choate will grant.
In determining the costs for a year at Choate, the Financial Aid Committee takes into account not only tuition charges and technology fee, but normally anticipated costs such as books, supplies, laundry (for boarding students) and travel. The committee also considers extenuating circumstances that may affect the family's contribution.
