Reunion Profile: Screenwriter Dean Georgaris ’88

Come hear screenwriters Dean Georgaris ’88 and Geoffrey Fletcher '88 (Oscar winner for “Precious”) at an afternoon symposium on Filmmaking: Concept to Screen during Reunion Weekend. In screenwriting, “the dreaded second act” is where your story either comes to life or dies. In 2006, when The Choate Rosemary Hall Bulletin last profiled screenwriter Dean Georgaris ’88, he was living alone in a Brentwood mansion he was too busy to furnish, pounding out Mission Impossible 3. He was living life in the fast lane, even when he wasn’t hugging the curves in his Porsche. Since then, he’s sold the mansion and opted for a simpler life. Today, he drives a Volvo, runs ultramarathons, and lives in the heart of Brentwood Village, where he can take a break from his computer to join a friend at a neighborhood café. He was executive producer of Life of Pi, which won four Academy Awards and earned more than $600 million worldwide. Recently, writer Kevin Mardesich '87 sat down with Dean for a chat about his second act.

2013 Alumni Award Presented Posthumously to Paula Loyd ’90 at School Meeting

Paula Loyd ’90 was awarded the School’s Alumni Award posthumously for her efforts to enhance civilian military coordination in Afghanistan. A civilian military officer embedded with the Human Terrain System, Ms. Loyd died, unarmed, at the hands of a Taliban sympathizer in 2009. Accepting the award on Paula’s behalf, at school meeting on April 24, were her mother, Mrs. Patty Ward, and Choate classmate Rafe Sagarin ’89.

2013 Alumni Award Presented to Actor Paul Giamatti ’85 at School Meeting

Paul Giamatti ’85 was awarded the School’s Alumni Award for his accomplishments in theater, television and film. The presentation was made at a School Meeting on April 3. Giamatti was introduced by Choate classmate and former president of the Choate Rosemary Hall Alumni Association Susan Barclay ’85. A citation was then read by Headmaster Alex D. Curtis before turning the program over to James Gong ’15 and Will Born ’15, members of Choate's Film Society, for a question and answer period.
