Choate Hosts ESA Diversity Conference

On May 3-4, Choate Rosemary Hall hosted the Eight Schools Association Diversity Conference attended by 24 participants from Choate, Exeter, Andover, Deerfield, Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss and NMH.

Dr. Keith Hinderlie, Choate's Director of Equity and Inclusion, and Associate Headmaster Kathleen Lyons Wallace welcomed conference attendees. Mb Duckett Ireland, English teacher and Chair of Choate's Diversity Education Committee, led a discussion on "Beyond Bathrooms and Pronouns: Preparing Your School Community for Inclusion of Transgender Students." The conference explored gender identity and the implications of the growing awareness of the needs and experiences of our communities, specifically, how schools can better prepare for transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) students. After lunch, Dr. Keith Hinderlie facilitated an "Open Space Dialogue," in which participants were free to discuss a broad range of diversity issues and topics concerning gender and identity.
