On Monday, February 1, four fourth-formers participated in the 2nd Annual Goodyear Presentations in World History, named for the late Zachary Goodyear, a former history and public speaking teacher at Choate Rosemary Hall. The four finalists included: Mark Su' 18, of Beijing, China; Abigail Drummond '18, of Queens, N.Y.; Madison Mandell '18, of Woodbridge, Conn.; and Mpilo Norris '18, of Windsor Mill, Maryland.
The four presentations covered topics ranging in different eras of history. The winning presentation, "Ming Retreat: A Missed Opportunity," was given by Maddy Mandell.
History teacher Courtney DeStefano coordinated the competition in which 12 World History classes participated. The formal presentations grew out of an informal 5-10 minute world history presentation that all fourth formers were required to complete for their classes. World History teachers picked the four finalists from a pool of semi-finalists. The five-part criteria used to judge the presentation was SPATE (Stance, Projection, Articulation, Tone, Eye Contact), a method of public speaking developed by Mr. Goodyear. Each of the finalists receives a book prize.
