Designed and decorated after a ski lodge resort restaurant in Sun Valley Idaho, The Rustic Oak, 165 Washington Avenue, North Haven, 203-239-1107, features a large see-through stone fireplace in its foyer and main dining room. It offers an eclectic mix of American cuisine with innovation and distinction.
The Little Rendezvous, 256 Pratt Street, Meriden, 203-235-0110, makes very good pizza, with no waiting. Take-out only.
Sally's Pizza, 237 Wooster Street, New Haven, 203-624-5271, serves what is most likely the best pizza you will ever eat. For a reservation, call after 11 pm or between 2 and 3 pm. Otherwise, be prepared to wait in a long line at peak times.
Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana, 157 Wooster Street, New Haven, 203-865-7602, is just up the street from Sally's and is also likely the best pizza you will ever eat! Their white clam (made with fresh clams, with or without mozzarella), tops Sally's, where they use canned clams. The wait might be quite long here, and they do not take reservations.
The Spot, 163 Wooster Street, 203-865-7602, is right behind Pepe's in New Haven, making virtually the same pizza as in front, only with less waiting.
Ibiza, 39 High Street, New Haven, 203-865-1933, is a wonderful Spanish restaurant with excellent service and very flavorful authentic dishes.

Louis' Lunch, 263 Crown Street, New Haven, 203-562-5507, claims to have made the first hamburger in America. The business was founded in 1895 by the great-grandfather of the young man behind the counter. The main feature is a hamburger on toast, with or without cheese, tomato or onion, and it is juicy and tasty. The ambiance is also unique, with a lot of banter between the owners and the customers. Even if you don't like hamburgers (they also make tuna salad on toast on Fridays and have soup in cold weather), take a look inside the brick building, as it is like going back in time.
Istanbul Cafe, 245 Crown Street, New Haven, 203-787-3881 is the first, and only, retaurant that serves Turkish cuisine exclusively.
Royal India, 140 Howe Street, 203-787-9493, is one of several Indian restaurants in the same area of New Haven. This one is a good bet.
Scoozi Trattoria and Wine Bar, 1104 Chapel Street, New Haven, 203-776-8268, serves excellent pasta dishes. The service and decor are also outstanding. Reservations are advised.
Caffe Adulis, 228 College Street, New Haven, 203-777-5081, is an Ethiopian restaurant which is beautifully decorated and serves very good food.
El Amigo Felix, 8 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, 203-785-8200, is a good bet for Mexican food.
Atticus Bookstore Café, 1082 Chapel Street, 203-776-4040, is a good stop for coffee, dessert and browsing after dinner in New Haven.
Koffee?, 104 Audubon Street, 203-562-5454, offers coffees, teas, pasties, and sandwiches in New Haven’s arts district. The walls often feature the works of local artists. Wireless and plug-in internet access is a draw.

Cosi, 338 Elm Street, New Haven, 203-495-9869, is a good espresso bar. You'd think you were in SoHo inside, and the coffee and sandwiches are quite good. If you take your laptop with you, they will provide a telephone jack. (Located at the corner of Elm and Howe Streets)
