Forever Changed
  • "I am a much more open-minded and accepting person because I studied abroad – benefits far beyond becoming fluent in a second language. I am forever grateful to Choate for providing me with this life-changing experience."
    — Michelle from New Canaan, CT
A Place in the World
  • "Thanks to the combination of support and challenge offered by the Choate program, I grew to love the people and customs of France. I began to appreciate my place in the world, and dare I say, I acquired a sense of humility."
    — Edward from Arlington, Virginia

Go global this summer with exhilarating options for 5 weeks of international study and travel in China, France or Spain.

For more than 30 years, Choate has offered a variety of study abroad programs in the summer to high school students. Native teachers experienced with teaching American students and carefully selected host families make for an unforgettable experience in the language and culture.

Each program includes:

  • Stimulating courses taught by carefully chosen native speakers in some of the world’s most historically significant cities
  • Excursions to landmarks including museums, cultural centers, and historic sites
  • Multi-week homestays with host families
  • Choate faculty teachers and chaperones

Eligibility: Study Abroad programs are available for students currently in grades 9-11. For Spain and France, students must have completed 9th grade and 2 years of language study. The China Program accepts high school students of all levels, including those who would like to begin the study of the language.

Orientation: Each program begins with a comprehensive orientation session on the Choate campus. The group is then transported to JFK airport in New York for travel. The program concludes upon arrival back to JFK.

Applications: All candidates must submit an application, application fee, official transcript, school recommendation and language teacher recommendation. Since the number of candidates for these programs typically exceeds the available spaces, early applications are recommended. Visit the How to Apply page for details.

Cost: China - $7,750; France - $8,000; Spain - $7,500. The cost includes airfare, transportation abroad, tuition, all meals and lodging, books, and entrance fees for group activities. Expenses not included in the fee are: passport, transportation to the Choate campus, transportation after return to the U.S., and personal expenses such as telephone calls and spending money. Expenses are based on the exchange rate effective September 1. Prices are subject to equitable adjustment should there be a significant change in the rate of exchange or in the airfare prior to the start of the program.

Academic Credit: A written report will be sent to the student’s school upon request and is always sent to parents. Strong language students have the opportunity to accelerate as much as a year in language as determined by their degree of improvement.
