The Writing Project
This intensive writing course is designed for students who have completed grade 9-12 and who are interested in exploring, improving, and gaining confidence in their writing skills. The two methods of instruction—critical and creative—allow students to approach literature in dramatically different ways. Creativity becomes integral to approaching the critical essay.

Curriculum
Teachers work with groups of 10 to 13 students, focusing on the development of each student's "voice" through experiential, fiction, and journal writing. Shorter assignments become larger pieces that may be developed into a final project.
Revision, editing and peer evaluation are key components of the program. The critical essay is approached near the end of the program after students feel more confident about the writing process.
Working individually with the teacher or in small groups, students learn how to tighten or expand passages, to remain focused on their subject, and to choose words more effectively. Students read their work aloud to learn more about their own writing and to discover that many kinds of experiences result in equally interesting stories.
Word processing strengthens revision efforts and enables students to become more comfortable and effective as writers. Students who have computers are encouraged to bring them.
Eligibility
Students are required to submit an application, application fee, topic essay, current transcript, school recommendation, two teacher recommendations and two graded English papers. The Writing Project is designed for students who are fluent English speakers and writers.
