Beginning Writers Workshop

We are currently in the process of revising and updating all programs, course and application information for summer 2009. We thank you for your patience and invite you to re-visit us at the end of November 2008 to see what exciting opportunities we offer students and their families!

The 2009 application will be available the end of October and we request that applicants not use the 2008 application. Thank you!

The Beginning Writers Workshop is designed for students currently in grades 5 or 6. Once a student attends this program, the student cannot attend it again as the program's curriculum remains consistent year to year.

Boarding

Beginning Writers Workshop students may board if they are 11 years old by the start of the program. There are a limited number of boarding places available, so early application is suggested.

Curriculum

The program focuses on the structure and fundamental mechanics of the writing process as well as various forms of writing. Students explore descriptive, expository, persuasive and narrative writing. In addition, more formal writing such as the five-paragraph essay is introduced. Students are encouraged to share their written work with classmates and read their work in class as well as group settings:

  1. Writing — Specific emphasis will be placed on choosing a topic, prewriting, drafting, revising, peer editing, and publishing, all of which are essential skills in the writing process.
  2. Reading — To be an effective writer it is essential to be an effective and confident reader. Students will read one novel which will serve as the basis for a variety of uniting topics and class discussions. Other short readings will be assigned.
  3. Speaking — Students will gain confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills on a daily basis by sharing their work in class. Students also present readings, including a narrative and/or informative reading on their written work.

Eligibility

Students are required to submit an application, application fee, personal essay, current transcript, school recommendation, two teacher recommendations, and two graded English papers.
