Choate's Current Stance on the Use of Generative AI

Choate Rosemary Hall’s values promote a dynamic balance between tradition and innovation.

Because the rapid development of Generative AI provides transformational opportunities to enhance the educational experience, advance the generation of new knowledge, foster continuous learning, and support the collective pursuit of excellence, Choate Rosemary Hall endorses the discerning, informed, and ethical use of generative AI by students, faculty, and staff.

For the past two years, Choate has tested and learned from our initial approach to generative AI. We are now moving from a period of responding to AI to one of stewarding its role within and beyond our community.

We are putting what we have learned into practice, sharing our knowledge and processes with others, grappling with AI’s environmental and broader impacts, and ensuring that its use reflects our values. At the center of this work is our commitment to balancing innovation and tradition, preserving human relationships and authentic work, and engaging with emerging technologies with curiosity and critical examination.

In a landscape that will continue to change, discerning, informed, and ethical use remains our compass. We will continue to learn, refine our practices, and share what we learn—building the judgment needed not simply to navigate the future, but to help shape it responsibly.

Our resources are organized into role-based hubs to help readers find what is most relevant to them, but all are open and accessible in the hope that Choate’s work and curated resources can also support other communities navigating similar questions.

Choate Rosemary Hall participated in a New York-area educational leaders for a conversation about artificial intelligence in education, including responsible and ethical AI use, teaching and learning, and strategies for using AI to augment—not replace—human learning, relationships, and expertise.

Governance & Leadership

Generative AI Policy Group 

Established in the fall of 2024, this 10-member group is charged with monitoring emerging AI technologies, evaluating ethical and regulatory implications, and guiding responsible, innovative use across campus. Bringing together leaders from key areas of school life, the group meets regularly to review new developments, coordinate best practices, and ensure the institution remains prepared for both the opportunities and risks presented by rapidly evolving technology. Head of School, Head of Student and Academic Life, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Communications, etc. all serve as members.

Foundation of Our Work: Community Collaboration

During the 2023-2024 academic year, two working groups collaborated in parallel to develop Choate’s initial approach to generative AI, establishing a comprehensive foundation for policy, practice, and institutional philosophy. Building on that work, responsibility for the continued stewardship and evolution of our approach now rests with the Generative AI Policy Group and the Director of Pedagogical Innovations and Emerging Technologies.
