At school meeting on May 10, Director of Community Service Melissa Koomson presented the 2021 John Kirby Simon '79 Awards to four students who have made great contributions to our local and global communities through service to others, and who continue to exemplify a commitment to service. The awards were presented to one individual from each form.
This year's recipients are:
- Hunter Bershtein '21, of Madison, Conn., a well-rounded and engaged leader both academically and athletically, who worked with both the New Haven Pride Center and the Yale Community Health Care Van;
- Claire Fu '22, of Hong Kong, a knowledgable and passionate member of International Student Mentoring, who tutored children in rural China through regular virtual lessons while starting a new initiative with the organization to create a youth community that focuses on science;
- Joy An '23, of Seattle, Wash., a curious and thoughtful student who worked to provide connections during the pandemic, preparing food for more than 50 people regularly, organized book drives, and hosted virtual workshops for school children; and
- Leyee Dei '24, of Shanghai, a hard-working and engaged student who worked to develop a business model for a school in a remote village in China, also helping to develop lessons and teach third grade students there.
