This summer, the English Department partnered with alumni from the Class of 2018 to publish the new Summer Reading Guide. This collaboration serves as a practical, accessible guide to this summer's all-school reading, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. The English Department worked with Alex Ashford, Ellen Devine, Rachel Myers, Megan Shea, and Victoria Pierotti to curate materials, and feedback was provided by Abigail Drummond '18, Shamari Harrington '18, and James Rose '18. The goal of this resource is to create a document that thoroughly and inclusively addresses the issues of systemic racism raised by the novel. The resource also provides questions for self-study and reflection to guide students through the reading.
Be sure to check out the rest of the new Summer Reading page for a full list of summer reading options, links for additional reading resources, and to learn more about the summer reading challenge: if the student body reads more than 3,500 books over the summer, the Andrew Mellon Library will donate 100 books to a literacy organization.
