Choate Announces 2026 All-School Read

From internships and jobs to vacations to spending quality time at home with loved ones, every student will have a unique experience throughout the summer. Still, one thing will tie their experiences all together — the 2026 Choate Rosemary Hall All-School Read.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the Choate Rosemary Hall English Department announced the 2026 Choate All-School Read is Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz. Published last August, the 2025 CALIBA Golden Poppy Octavia E. Butler Award-winning scifi novel brings readers into a post-war Bay Area as a group of deactivated food service robots open their own restaurant. Delivering a complex mix of serious issues, lighthearted comedy, and drama, the award-winning book follows each robot as they navigate the ups and downs of running a small business while seeking their place in a new world that may not initially accept them.

"This is a story―about building community despite adversity, fighting for your rights and individuality, and creating art that you want to see in the world―that I didn't know I needed right now. And it was so much fun to read," award-winning author Martha Wells wrote.

Automatic Noodle by Analee Newitz follows Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green as the latest all-School read. Heading into the 2025-2026 academic year, students across all forms read Green's work about how tuberculosis, a curable disease, remains one of the deadliest infections. In September, Green visited campus to discuss his work with the entire student body and also joined a creative class, where he met young writers and engaged in small-group discussions.

After students spend a bit of their summer engaging with the text, Newitz will make the trip to campus to meet with them. The annual visit from the author of the all-School read allows members of the Choate community to engage with the assigned text in a new and dynamic way.
