Choate's 'The Old Man and the Old Moon' Earns Three Nominations at the Stephen Sondheim Awards

On April 20, 2026, the Black Rock Theater unveiled its nominations for the 2026 Stephen Sondheim Awards. Among those nominated were Vera Lampe ‘27 (Achievement in Lighting Design), Bree Miksovsky ‘26 (Achievement in Costume Design), and Alexandros Antonopoulos ‘26 (Best Actor). Alexandros, Bree, and Vera each played an integral role in last fall's production of The Old Man and the Old Moon, which sold out all showings from October 30 through November 1, 2025. The trio will make their way to the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Conn., on May 9, 2026, for the awards ceremony, where they will be celebrated by their fellow nominees, peers, educators, and creatives.

Presented by the Black Rock Theater in association with the Institute for American Musical Theatre and the Shubert Theatre, the Sondheim Awards recognize excellence in high school musical theater across Connecticut and Massachusetts. Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the program strives to elevate and advance high school musical theater through community, creativity, and collaboration. Beyond the awards ceremony, students and educators involved in the program can attend workshops that deepen their understanding of theater and improve their craft.

"The Sondheim Awards has an educational aspect that I was compelled by," The Old Man and The Old Moon Director Bari Robinson said in February. "You get access to several different workshops and a network of professionals and educators that students can take advantage of. So, we're going to a dance audition workshop. We've been to musical theater workshops, monologue workshops, etc. They have technical workshops, too. So, that was a big selling point for getting involved. That, and the fact that the Sondheim Awards, at the Shubert Theatre on May 9, give students the chance to participate in that big awards ceremony. It’s like the Tony Awards for high school."

May will prove to be a busy month for the Choate Rosemary Hall Theater Program. As mentioned, the Stephen Sondheim Awards take place on May 9 in New Haven. Twelve days later, the School's spring musical will debut in Wallingford, Conn.
