Documentary Filmmaking

Storytelling helps us process the world around us and share our experiences with others. This course offers students an introduction to documentary filmmaking from story to sound design.

The first half of the program focuses on identifying the strategies and tools of documentary filmmakers through screenings and discussion of a wide array of documentary content.

The second half focuses on a shooting and editing practicum and the production of a documentary short film.

This course offers real-world skills and experience in project planning and development, interviewing subjects, and using film to tell a story.

Guest artists, producers, filmmakers, and actors will hold virtual talks to share their professional journeys and offer workshops in their area of expertise.

Note: A Macbook or iMac running Mac OS X Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur; or a Windows 10 based laptop or desktop is required. We recommend the computer is no older than four years. Choate provides software and licenses.
