Debate

On one level, debate is an intellectual sport, but on another level, debate is superb preparation for life. Students learn to be objective and analytical, to research and organize cases, to prioritize and extemporize, to overcome shyness and handle criticism, to reach an audience, and to work as a team.

Beginning with simple extemporaneous debates, (e.g. “winter is better than summer”), students work up to prepared team debates on substantive and subtle issues of public policy, moral ethics, history, and science.

The course is intended for potential tournament debaters as well as non-debaters who want to learn how to think faster on their feet.
