In this Shakespeare course, students read four plays, at least three of which were written, timely enough, during an outbreak of either bubonic plague or smallpox: Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and King Lear. Close, careful readings of the texts is expected, as well as a willingness to contribute to discussion each day.
No previous experience with Shakespeare is required—just a willingness to immerse oneself in the rich language and brilliant ideas of the writer who most defined for us today what it is to be human.
