Physics Workshop Overview
Our four Physics Workshop courses focus on increasing student comfort level in the often challenging discipline of physics.
Students may choose to take one or more of the workshops depending on their interests and goals. Taken together, the four workshops cover nearly all the topics included in a typical high school physics course and help students transition into their next physics class.
Simulations are used to help reinforce conceptual understanding, and students develop problem-solving techniques that support much of the quantitative analysis that they are likely to see in a full-year course.
Prerequisite: Algebra I.
Note: A scientific calculator is required.
Concepts in Physics: Electricity & Magnetism
Note: This workshop requires a two-block commitment—2 & 3
Throughout this course, students look at both electrostatics (static electricity) and electrodynamics (circuits). Charge, current, voltage, and power are discussed followed by a brief introduction of magnetism topics. As time permits, students also study permanent magnets, electromagnetism, and induction.
Prerequisite: Algebra I.
Note: A scientific calculator is required.

JFK ‘35 Institute in Government
Program Overview
Established to honor the memory of President Kennedy—a member of Choate’s Class of 1935—The John F. Kennedy '35 Institute in Government is designed to stimulate curiosity about public policy and the desire to serve the public interest. As Kennedy Institute participants, students take three required KI classes over the course of our six-week program and experience government in action through online meetings and conversations with representatives of interest groups, national political parties, and the media. Students build on what they learn in the classroom and get a real insider's feel for politics. While knowledge of politics is not necessary for the program, the desire and willingness to learn about politics, economics, U.S. history, and international affairs in class is essential.
Note: matriculating and current Choate students who successfully complete the John F. Kennedy '35 Institute in Government program in the summer will satisfy the academic year requirement of PS430HO Political Ideologies for the John F. Kennedy ’35 Signature Program in Government and Public Service.
American Government and Politics
This course is one of three required courses in the JFK ‘35 Institute in Government Program.
In this foundation course, the Constitution and federalism are viewed through the lens of contemporary politics. Students learn how the offices of the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court operate in theory and reality. This course focuses on topics of current interest and major political candidates and their respective party platforms.

Foundations of Political Thought
This course is one of three required courses in the JFK ‘35 Institute in Government Program.
This course explores the underpinnings of Western political philosophy and exposes students to the basic tenets of modern economics and the ways in which public policy shapes and is shaped by economic conditions. It also explores the meanings of conservatism and liberalism in contemporary politics and provides comparisons with other political and economic systems where appropriate.

Topics in Public Policy
This course is one of three required courses in the JFK ‘35 Institute in Government Program.
The New York Times and other national and international newspapers serve as a lens through which students analyze how different groups influence American public policy. Students use current events to dive into some of the inner workings on Capitol Hill and to prepare to speak with current policymakers at the end of the course via Zoom.
Students begin with the basics of public policy, dive into current events to better understand how public policy shapes the day-to-day experiences of individual citizens, and discuss how public policy represents the key components of our political system at work.

ELL Classes
English Language Learner (ELL) courses attract talented students* from around the world who seek to enhance their English language skills in a supportive and rigorous six-week program. Through the use of a wide variety of language learning strategies, ELL courses in reading, writing, conversation, art, and TOEFL Prep drive substantive changes in each student's ability to read, write, speak, and understand spoken English while working both independently and collaboratively with peers. Students are welcome to enroll in as many ELL courses as they would like, and those who take 3 or more ELL classes during the summer will be recognized with a special certificate documenting their completion of Choate’s English Language Learner Program.
*High school students who have studied English for at least 3 years, and middle school students, two years.

Immersion Geometry
Immersion Geometry
Note: This course requires a four-block commitment—2, 3, 5, 6.
This intensive course covers the standard year-long geometry curriculum. At a brisk pace, students explore the fundamentals of Euclidean geometry as well as various applications of these concepts in the real world. As time permits, algebra is incorporated to help students review and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
After gaining experience making conjectures and testing hypotheses, students progress to writing formal deductive proofs, using paragraphs as well as the two-column format.
In order to complete this year-long course in the summer, students attend four online class blocks a day (two in the morning EDT and two in the afternoon EDT).
This course is appropriate for highly motivated students who have completed Algebra I.
Note: An iPad with Notability is required.
Students in Immersion Geometry receive a traditional letter grade which is included on the Summer Transcript.
Choate students who successfully complete this course may fulfill the diploma requirement in geometry.
Returning and matriculating students entering the fourth form who have not yet completed a geometry course may choose this course for that purpose. Students entering the third form are generally not approved to take this course.
In all cases, students must first obtain permission to take the course for credit from the academic year Mathematics and Computer Sciences department head, and then must comply with all attendance and course expectations. The Math department head will determine final eligibility for diploma credit based upon the student’s successful completion of the course.
